Grand Rapids Township Assessors’ Review & Board of Review The Assessor’s Review Each year the Township Assessing Department holds an informal appeal process which takes place immediately following the arrival of the assessment notices in February. During this appeal process, known as the Assessor’s Review, township residents may call or make an appointment to meet with a member of the Assessing Department Staff to discuss changes to the assessment on their property and make an appeal to have those changes made at that time. This appeal period lasts approximately 2 weeks and is immediately followed by the March Board of Review. The Board of Review The Board of Review consists of three members, each appointed by the Township Board for a two-year term. Board of Review members must be qualified electors and at least two members must also be township landowners and taxpayers. The Board of Review meets in March each year to review and examine the assessment roll for that year after it has been prepared and certified by the Township Assessing Department, and to hear appeals from taxpayers regarding their property assessments. The Board of Review then certifies the new assessment roll as amended. The annual Board of Review meetings in March are the only time when the Board of Review can hear appeals from residents concerning their assessments. Appointments should be made to meet with the March Board of Review, and can be scheduled by calling the Township Assessing Department at (616) 361-7391. The Board of Review also meets in July and December each year to review and correct clerical errors or mutual mistakes in fact that may have occurred in the assessment roll.
