Grand Rapids Charter Township contracts with Inspection Services for Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Permits. Permits for Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical work is done directly with Inspection Services on their applications. BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS Building Permits must be applied for at the Grand Rapids Township Office. To obtain a permit, you must first obtain a driveway or address permit from the Kent County Road Commission. If you do not have public water or sewer, you must obtain a well and septic permit from the Kent County Health Department. Also if you are disturbing more than an acre of soil or are within 500 feet of a lake or stream, you must also obtain a soil erosion permit from the Kent County Road Commission. Once you have obtained the above mentioned permits, you make application at the Grand Rapids Township Office with two copies of your blueprints, a site plan and copies of the above permits. Grand Rapids Township reviews the application checking compliance with the Zoning Ordinance, retains one blueprint, then sends the application to Inspection Services for permitting. Inspection Services reviews the blueprint and then issues the building permit. From that point on, you deal directly with Inspection Services. CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS WATER AND SEWER: If you are in the portion of Township served by City services, you make application to Grand Rapids Inspection Services, 1120 Monroe Avenue NW, Grand Rapids Michigan, 49503, phone number (616) 456-3040. PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP WATER AND DPW SEWER: A small northern portion of Grand Rapids Township has Plainfield Township water and sewer available to it.
